Arrival and settlement in New Zealand

William and Betsy Ivory along with their four children arrived in Lyttelton aboard Cashmere on 23rd October 1855. They were followed by Aquila and Ann Ivory and their two children who arrived aboard Glentanner on 3rd October 1857.

Hawkins, D. N. - in his authoritative local histories Beyond the Waimakariri: a regional history and Rangiora: the passing years and people in a Cantrbury town provides an account of the Ivory family settlement in the Waimakariri district.

1890 payroll

This extract from the wages ledger (employee identities hidden) of the nursery in Rangiora is for the week ending Thursday 20th November, 1890. The daily rate ranged from 1/2 to 8/4, this was during the difficult times of the long depression in New Zealand through the 1880s and 1890s. (click on image to enlarge)
